Saul Becker & Stephen Vitiello
Field Recordings

The Horticultural Society of New York
May 9 – July 6, 2012

For Field Recordings, multimedia artists Saul Becker and Stephen Vitiello collected fragments of the natural world and re-staged them as altered landscapes presented in sculptures, sound art, photographs, drawings, and video.

The exhibition space was activated by three collaborative works that combined Vitiello’s atmospheric sound compositions with Becker’s electroplated wildflower sculptures. These sculptures were accompanied by Becker’s print-like landscape drawings, as well as a series of Polaroids and a Super-8 film by Vitiello. Collectively, their work presented a vision of landscapes that are familiar yet alien, acknowledging our current anxiety regarding the environment while reveling in the beauty and wildness of the non-human world.
